Choosing a Safe Oral
Treatment for Yeast Infection
Oral Yeast Infection,
otherwise known as thrush, most commonly affects infants
but can appear in older people as well. Safe and effective
oral treatment for Yeast Infection is a priority
especially when dealing with a baby. Fortunately, there
are natural treatments that can be used in very young
infants safely. Thrush is usually easy to recognize by
white patches on the tongue and inside of the mouth, but
your child’s pediatrician can confirm the Yeast Infection
easily before you start treatment.
Thrush
Treatment for
Infants
Oral treatment for Yeast Infection in infants requires a
cautious approach. With delicate immune systems and smaller
bodies overall, babies should be treated with safe, natural
remedies as much as possible. Most drugs for Yeast Infection
are not safe for use in infants, but natural remedies can be
used.
Gentian Violet is a popular treatment for thrush that is
available from the pharmacy counter without a prescription. The
bright purple dye is safe albeit very messy – it does stain the
mouth and any clothing it comes into contact with, so work
carefully when using it. Gentian Violet can be used as an oral
treatment for yeast infection by swabbing the affected areas in
the mouth with a clean cotton swab.

Probiotics are also a safe and natural
choice for treating thrush in infants. Add the probiotics to
baby’s bottle or open a capsule and sprinkle directly into
baby’s mouth. Older infants who are eating solid foods can eat
yogurt as well for their probiotic content.
Preventing
Re-infection
When your baby has thrush, be sure to sterilize all bottles,
pacifiers and anything else that goes into baby’s mouth
thoroughly to kill any yeast that has been transferred to the
surfaces. Don’t save partially used feedings for later, instead
use a fresh bottle every time.
If thrush has been diagnosed in a breastfed baby, it is
likely that the mother could be infected as well, so treating
for a Yeast Infection of the nipples and breasts is a good
idea. Gentian Violet is safe to use directly on the nipples,
and ingestion of probiotics will help too.
Thrush in older children and adults. While not as common as
thrush in infants, older children as well as adults can
contract thrush. Oral yeast infection treatment in older
patients is similar to that in babies, but there are also other
options that can be considered. If Gentian Violet and
probiotics are not solving the problem, you might need a
stronger treatment.
Antifungal medications in an ingested form can help to kill
yeast from the inside out and thus cure the thrush problem.
They are available by prescription only through your doctor. In
cases of resistant Yeast Infection, it is likely that the yeast
has spread throughout the body and an oral medication is the
appropriate treatment.
During treatment, avoid foods high in sugar or yeast-based
foods and beverages. It’s a good idea to brush your teeth
regularly and rinse with mouthwash to remove traces of sugars
and other foods that the yeast can feed on. You may need to do
this more often than usual during treatment.
For both adults and children, oral yeast infection treatment
requires a slightly different approach than infections
elsewhere in the body. Because many topical treatments are not
safe to ingest, they can’t be used in the mouth. Fortunately,
there are safe and effective treatments for thrush in all
ages.
